What’s Jesus’ Value?

Daily Devotional: Day 27

“There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head . . . But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?” (Matthew 26:7-8, KJV).

How much is Jesus worth to you? This is a question every Christian must answer. The choices we make in our daily Christian life says a lot about Jesus’ worth to us. We set different values on him, unconsciously. We don’t say it aloud, but we do. And the Lord knows it. In today’s Bible verse, we get an idea of Jesus’ value to the disciples before his resurrection. A woman poured very precious ointment on Jesus, and the disciples’ response was, “To what purpose is this waste?” To the woman, Jesus was worth every ounce of that precious ointment. But, to the disciples, Jesus wasn’t worth it. Of course, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. You are your words. We know that, except for Judas, all the disciples meant well. However, what they said reflected what they truly believed about Jesus at that time.

To the disciples, Jesus was a good Master and even the Son of God, but he wasn’t worth a full box of precious ointment. Their response is brutally astonishing: “To what purpose is this waste?” The implication is that, if they had that amount of money, they wouldn’t waste it on Jesus. Sad, isn’t it? It’s amazing that after this incident, the disciples kept their job. Don’t think that what happened at that time doesn’t happen today, because it does. Perhaps, to your friends, relatives, classmates, co-workers or even fellow church members, your dedication to Jesus is a waste. They probably despise you, call you names or imagine that you have nothing better to do with your life, your money, your time, your talent and your skill. Or perhaps, it’s you who at times undervalue Jesus, thinking you have better things to do with your resources and time than to spend them on Jesus or his Church. This Man, Jesus, shed his blood for you, for free. He rose from the dead for you, for free. He forgave all your sins, for free. He saved you from hell, for free. He has given you eternal life, for free. He has given you a seat in heaven, for free. He has filled you with the Holy Spirit, for free. Is this Man worth your everything? I believe He is. Do you?

Pray:

Daddy, thank you for this amazing privilege to call you my Dad. Thank you for the honor of having Jesus as my Brother. Thank you for your gift of forgiveness and righteousness. Thank you for all the favors you have showered on me. I didn’t deserve any of it. Through the power of your Spirit in me, I repent of the times I’ve undervalued Jesus. I know that Jesus is worth all of me and all that I have. And it’s my honor to shower my all on him. In the Name of Jesus. Amen. (Enjoy this song by Hillsong).
