God Talks about Us

Daily Devotional: Day 35

“And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” (Job 1:8, RSV)

As I was writing this devotional, I couldn’t help but think, “God, why didn’t you leave poor Job alone? Did you have to boast about him to Satan of all people?” Anyway, these were just thoughts in my head. Let’s get to today’s business. You’ll understand God better when you think of him as a parent who cares about his relationship with you. Today’s Bible verse recalls a dialogue between God and Satan. The latter had been roaming the earth, presumably to stir up trouble – as he often does. When the sons of God appeared, he too, appeared. Then, God began to speak highly of Job, a man from the East. Notice from the passage the extent to which God boasted about Job. Being a Father, God takes pride in the godliness, excellence, beauty and successes of his children. And he’s not ashamed to talk about it – even with Satan. Always remember that God is your Daddy (Abbà, in Aramaic language). This will change how you perceive him and how you live your life.

The Bible says in Psalm 149:4 that “the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.” This means the Lord is pleased with his people and has delightful affections toward them. God doesn’t hide his excitement about us. Sometimes, we forget that God, too, has emotions. When Christ came into the world, God declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16-17). Through the new birth, we’ve all become God’s beloved sons and daughters. God is delighted in us. He calls us “beloved.” If he boasted about Job, imagine the things he says about us, his new creation. From today, keep in mind that your Father in heaven likes to talk about his children. He’s excited for you. He can’t stop thinking about you. He can’t stop loving you. His eyes are on you all the time. He can’t stop talking about you, because you’re his masterpiece, his child, his new creation. If God doesn’t mind speaking highly of us, you know that Satan will also look for an opportunity to do the opposite. Don’t give Satan a chance to say something bad about you. Present yourself as a living and holy sacrifice acceptable to God (Romans 12:1-2).

Pray:

Daddy, I’m amazed by you. Who am I, that you should talk about me? Who am I that you should be excited about me? You lavish me with your pure love and affections. Thank you for making me your child and for blessing me with your won righteousness. I yield to you and offer myself to you as an instrument of righteousness. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
