Recipe for a Good Life

Daily Devotional: Day 83

“Who is the man who desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34:12-14, NKJV).

In the Bible, God has given us the perfect recipe for a good and wholesome life. More and more people today are becoming concerned about health and fitness. Gyms are filled with men and women, young and old, working hard to live long and healthy lives. Nutrition and diet experts, too, are growing in numbers and in importance. The common denominator here is that all of us desire to not only live long, but more importantly, to enjoy good days – days full of peace, health and wholeness.

If you’re into health and fitness, keep it up. God wants you to take good care of the body He has given you; the body in which He dwells as in a temple. That said, let’s get to today’s Scripture. As always, I want you to take a good look at God’s Word.

The Psalmist poses an interesting existential question. Let’s break it down into two parts. First, “Who desires life?” Second, “Who loves many days, that he may see good?” Of course, the Psalmist knows that everyone wants to see many good days in their life. So, without hesitation, he gives us three key biblical tips for living a life of goodness:

1) Keep your tongue from evil and deceit. Know this: Each time you use your tongue for evil and deceit, you do grave damage to your own life and you reduce the quality of your life. If you want a good life, God wants you to keep your tongue from all forms of evil.

2) Depart from evil and do good. Evil is toxic. There are enough toxins in the world; don’t add more toxins to your life. Be a doer of good, not of evil; for whatever you sow, you shall reap. Sow good, and you shall reap good.

3) Seek peace and pursue it. Peace in your life will keep depression away. And you know that being free from depression is beneficial to your life. Good days won’t come to you if you’re not a man of peace. Don’t be a creator of chaos, conflict, division and trouble. Rather, be a seeker and pursuer of peace, for peace is an essential ingredient for a good and healthy life.

There you have it: God’s recipe for those who desire life and good days.

Prayer,

My Father and my God, I receive your Word for me. By your power, preserve me from walking the path of evil and make me a seeker and pursuer of peace. To you be the glory. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
