Daily Devotional: Day 89
“Nevertheless the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, the but the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you” (Deuteronomy 23:5, NKJV).
Once upon a time, Balak, king of Moab, hired the services of Balaam to curse the Israelites (cf. Numbers chapters 22-24) who were on their journey toward the Promised Land. Today’s reading from Deuteronomy references that incident. As the Israelites got closer to their destination, the Lord gave them commandments and instructions to help them have a meaningful relationship with God. These instructions often included a call to remember God’s faithfulness and unconditional love. Today’s text contains a truthsabout the character of God which should inspire and encourage us all.
Now notice the reason why God turned the curse into a blessing, for it is very important. The Bible says God turned the curse into a blessing, because He loved His people. The Lord wanted the Israelites to know that the curse against them was diverted because of God’s love and not because of their good deeds. Sometimes, people think they are entitled to God’s blessings. But that’s a mistake. The truth is, God blesses us because He loves us. And today, I want you to be persuaded that God loves you. And His love for you shall be your shield against whatever your enemies have planned against you.
For the sake of His love for you, God will not listen to the “Balaams” and “Balaks” in your life. At this very moment, there might be people scheming against you, undermining you, wishing your downfall. Maintain your calm and let God worry about them. Your enemies don’t know what they’re up against. Because you’re saved and purchased with the Blood of Jesus, whoever plots against you is plotting against Jesus Himself.
Sometimes you go about minding your business, doing no harm. Yet there are people who feel threatened and will spare no effort in destroying you. God knows about their scheme and shall foil it before you even know there was a plot against you.
God knew about the secret plot to curse Israel and He intervened powerfully on their behalf. Not only did He deliver them, He turned the curse into a blessing. Herein lies your joy: The more your enemies curse you, the more they’ll see you prosper. Be not afraid. Just be calm and know that the One who loves you is greater than all who hate you. Halleluiah!
Prayer:
My God and my Father, thank you for your unconditional love for me. I take refuge in your love. Thank you for turning all curses against me into a blessing. And grant repentance to my enemies. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
