When You Let Go, God Supplies

Daily Devotional: Day 136

“And the Lord said to Abram [Abraham], after Lot had separated from him:  ‘Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. . . Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you'” (Genesis 13:14-15, 17, NKJV).

Yesterday, we learned about the separation of Abraham and Lot. Today’s reading tells us about what happened after Lot’s departure. When Abraham yielded to Lot, the latter chose the most fertile part of the land – the Jordan plain. But, Abraham was content to settle on the remaining portion of the land. Notice that Abraham, though he had the right of seniority, did not contend with Lot. He remained gracious, calm and composed. He was not envious of Lot for having chosen the fertile portion of the land. Instead, he showed that he was secure in God, and that he didn’t need to quarrel with his own relative over a piece of land. Most likely, Abraham had not forgotten God’s promises to him earlier in Genesis 12:1-3.
In Genesis 13:10, we’re told that “Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan.” After he had left, God spoke to Abraham. Notice that He instructed Abraham to lift up his eyes to the north, south, east and west. All that Abraham saw, God promised to give to him and his descendants. Additionally, God told Abraham to walk through the length and breadth of the land as though it already belonged to him. 
The lesson we can learn from today’s passage is this: When your life is rooted in the promises of God, you have no reason to feel insecure. Rather, you have every reason to be confident and content, knowing that all things will work together for your good. Abraham may have lost the fertile part of the land to Lot, but he refused to be bitter. His hope was in the promises of God. And, surely, soon after Lot left, God showed up and offered Abraham a blessing much greater than what he could have acquired from contending with Lot.
When you put your trust in the promises of God, He will not fail you. God has better things for you. Do not envy your friends, colleagues, or family members. Do not contend with them over the things of this world. Put your hope in God’s precious promises. He will surprise you with blessings far greater than what you could have expected. When you let go, God supplies even more abundantly. Instead of focusing on what you’ve lost or what you don’t have, focus on the blessings and opportunities God is setting before you.
