Rivers of Living Water Flowing in You

Daily Devotion|Day 254

“. . . ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the [Holy] Spirit . . .” (John 7:37-39, NKJV).

Water is life, they say. Nowhere is this statement more significant than in the area of Christian spirituality. In today’s passage, Jesus reveals another side of Him. He calls on anyone who is thirsty to come to Him and drink – freely. When He speaks of ‘drinking’ from Him, He means ‘believing’ in Him.

In other words, believing in Jesus is tantamount to drinking from Him. With this statement, Jesus reveals that He is the Fountain of Life and the Supplier of Living Water. The implication is obvious. When you come to Jesus, you will never be the same again. He will fill you with the very essence of life.

Observe carefully Jesus’ choice of words. He says that anyone who believes in Him, out of that person’s heart (belly) will flow rivers of living water. Notice that the rivers of living water will not reside outside the believer. The rivers will flow from inside the believer. That’s amazing!

Another observation is that the water Jesus speaks of is living and active. The water flows constantly inside you. As the living water flows, it gives life, energy, health and dynamism to your spirit and your whole being. You have this water running inside you, if you are a believer. Are you aware of that? Jesus doesn’t offer you stagnant water. Rather, He gives you water that is flowing, unhindered. This means Jesus wants you to experience a dynamic spiritual life. Spiritual stagnation is not His plan for you. He wants you to pulsate with the dynamic life of the living God.

Next, the Bible reveals that the rivers of living water Jesus is talking about is none other than the Holy Spirit. Here, Jesus is revealed as the Supplier of the Holy Spirit. When you come to Jesus, He gives you water to drink. This ‘water’ Jesus gives you is not tap water or bottled water. It is the Holy Spirit. This means the Holy Spirit is your spiritual drink. As Paul says, we Christians have all been “made to drink of the one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13).

The Holy Spirit is your source of vitality and dynamism. Ignore Him at your own risk. In Jeremiah 2:13, the LORD describes Himself as the “fountain of living waters.” When Jesus says that believers have rivers of living water flowing inside them, it means that you, the believer, are connected to the source of divine life. Because of this connection, the life which flows in Jesus Christ is the same life which flows in youYou and Jesus have one life. This is amazing grace!

Submit to the leading of the Spirit. Let Him have His way as He had His way with Jesus. Stay connected to Life.

BlessingMay the Lord cause a manifestation of abundance in your life. In Jesus Name. Amen.
